CHAPTER ONE

Introduction

Entrepreneurship has increasingly grown to be a fundamental driving force of institutional increase and sustainability, with its concepts being adopted throughout numerous sectors which include non-secular businesses (Kumar et al., 2023). In Nigeria, mainly inside Lagos State, Pentecostal churches have demonstrated brilliant adaptability through integrating entrepreneurial techniques into their operational models (Oye-oluwafemi, 2018). This phenomenon reflects a broader fashion wherein spiritual establishments are evolving beyond conventional dependence on tithes and services, venturing into diverse monetary sports consisting of educational establishments, media businesses, and real estate development (Nwankwo et al., 2020). The ability of those churches to harness entrepreneurial procedures has now not only enhance their financial stability however also increased their impact and capability for community effect (Nwabuisi, 2019).

The speedy development of Pentecostal churches in Lagos State can be attributed to their progressive use of business models to fund enlargement and outreach applications. Scholars have stated that these churches often operate with a dual focus: gratifying religious mandates even as concurrently carrying out earnings-producing ventures (Phuah, 2024). For example, institutions like Covenant University, owned by using Living Faith Church, and LoveWorld TV, operated by means of Christ Embassy, exemplify how spiritual organizations have efficiently diverse their revenue streams (Ukah, 2014). Such ventures allow churches to finance huge-scale tasks, along with worship centers, humanitarian services, and worldwide missions, thereby reinforcing their societal relevance (Tongoi, 2004).

However, the connection of religion and entrepreneurship increases vital theological and moral considerations. While some argue that these business activities provide necessary assets for church growth and network development, others warning against the ability dangers of commercialization (Wilson, 2012). Critics contend that excessive attention on profit-making ventures may additionally dilute the spiritual task of churches and cause conflicts of hobby (Murray, 2011). Additionally, problems of economic transparency and duty have emerged as tremendous worries, with some church buildings going through allegations of mismanagement (Yasmin et al., 2014). These debates highlight the want for a balanced method that aligns entrepreneurial tasks with core spiritual values. This study seeks to contribute to present literature by examining how selected on Pentecostal churches in Lagos State utilize entrepreneurship to drive growth and improvement.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing impact of Pentecostal church buildings in Lagos State, there is constrained empirical studies on how entrepreneurial activities make contributions to their growth and improvement. Many of these churches have interaction in business ventures together with colleges, bookstores, media homes, and event centers, yet the quantity to which those initiatives enhance their sustainability remains underexplored (Davis, 2019).

A pressing situation revolves across the capacity tension between spiritual missions and commercial interests. As Gifford et al. (2004) observes, the increasing commercialization of non-secular activities raises essential questions about the integrity of Pentecostal churches' primary mandate. There is developing proof that some churches prioritize profit-making ventures over pastoral care and spiritual nourishment (Daniel, 2020), yet systematic studies documenting this shift stays scarce. Furthermore, the dearth of standardized economic reporting mechanisms in many of those church buildings makes it hard to assess the real effect of their entrepreneurial sports (Djafar et al., 2020). This examine seeks to address these understanding gaps by using presenting a complete evaluation of Pentecostal entrepreneurship in Lagos State.
