ABSTRACT
The study critically examined the effectiveness of biblical principles in promoting societal peace and resolving conflicts between the Abba community in Njikoka LGA and the Ukpo community in Dunukofia LGA of Anambra State. This study conveniently sampling respondents who were administered with questionnaires. Relevant conceptual, theoretical and empirical literature was reviewed. Three hundred (300) respondents constitute the sample size for this study. The descriptive and analytical approach was adopted using Chi-square to test and analyze the hypotheses earlier stated. Findings revealed that biblical principles significantly contribute to peacebuilding and conflict resolution between the Abba and Ukpo communities. Findings of the study also reveals that faith-based mediation is more effective than conventional conflict resolution mechanisms in addressing communal disputes. Findings of the study also reveals that biblical teachings on reconciliation and forgiveness significantly influence peace efforts in conflict-prone communities. Finally, findings of the study further reveal that there are significant challenges associated with applying biblical principles in resolving conflicts between the Abba and Ukpo communities. It was therefore concluded that effectiveness of biblical principles significantly promotes societal peace and resolving conflicts between the Abba community in Njikoka LGA and the Ukpo community in Dunukofia LGA of Anambra State. It was suggested that religious leaders and faith-based organizations should be formally integrated into the conflict resolution framework within the Abba and Ukpo communities.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Conflicts are an inherent aspect of human interactions, often arising from disagreements over resources, governance, historical claims, and socio-political factors. In Nigeria, communal conflicts have become persistent and deeply rooted in ethnic, religious, and territorial disputes. These conflicts threaten national unity, social stability, and economic development. The state of Anambra, particularly the communities of Abba in Njikoka Local Government Area (LGA) and Ukpo in Dunukofia LGA, has witnessed prolonged tensions resulting from land disputes and power struggles. These disputes have led to legal battles, violence, destruction of property, and deep-seated animosities between the affected groups. While governmental and traditional mediation efforts have been employed in resolving such disputes, their effectiveness has often been questioned due to bias, partiality, and lack of sustainability (Nwolise, 2012). In light of this, religious principles, particularly biblical teachings, offer an alternative framework for conflict resolution that emphasizes justice, forgiveness, and reconciliation.
The Bible serves as a significant moral compass, providing timeless wisdom on fostering peace and resolving conflicts. Scriptural injunctions emphasize love, justice, and reconciliation, which are crucial for achieving lasting peace in any society. Jesus’ instruction to "love your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22:39, NIV) and Paul’s exhortation to "make every effort to live in peace with everyone" (Hebrews 12:14, NIV) illustrate the centrality of peace in Christian teachings. Biblical narratives also present practical models for conflict resolution, such as Joseph’s forgiveness of his brothers (Genesis 50:20) and Jesus’ emphasis on peaceful reconciliation in Matthew 18:15-17. These principles provide conflict-prone societies with moral and ethical guidelines to address disputes constructively and prevent escalation (Adeyemo, 2006).
In Nigeria, where religion plays a dominant role in shaping societal values, biblical principles have been employed in peacebuilding efforts by churches, faith-based organizations, and religious leaders. Studies have shown that religious leaders possess significant influence in conflict resolution, as their moral authority allows them to mediate disputes effectively (Ikelegbe, 2010). The intervention of Christian organizations in ethnic and communal crises across the country has demonstrated the power of faith-based peacebuilding in fostering dialogue and reconciliation. However, despite the wealth of biblical teachings on conflict resolution, many communities remain trapped in cycles of violence, largely due to the politicization of disputes, economic interests, and resistance to change (Obiefuna & Okonkwo, 2019).
The case of Abba and Ukpo communities exemplifies the complexities of communal conflicts in Nigeria. Land disputes, historical grievances, and political rivalries have fueled tensions between these two communities, resulting in violent clashes and prolonged legal battles. Governmental interventions, including court rulings and security enforcement, have not been able to fully resolve the conflict, as the underlying issues remain deeply entrenched. The failure of conventional conflict resolution mechanisms highlights the need for alternative approaches that address the root causes of disputes and promote genuine reconciliation. Biblical principles offer a holistic approach that not only seeks to resolve conflicts but also fosters healing, forgiveness, and social harmony (Galtung, 1996).
One of the significant advantages of biblical conflict resolution is its emphasis on restorative justice rather than retributive justice. The biblical model encourages parties involved in disputes to seek common ground, acknowledge past wrongs, and work towards reconciliation rather than revenge. This approach is particularly relevant in communal conflicts, where prolonged hostilities can lead to generational grievances. By adopting biblical principles such as humility, patience, and dialogue, communities can move from hostility to peaceful coexistence (Ojo, 2015). In the case of Abba and Ukpo, the application of these principles could offer a sustainable pathway to peace by encouraging open communication, forgiveness, and mutual respect among the conflicting parties.
Despite the potential effectiveness of biblical principles in resolving conflicts, several challenges hinder their full implementation in Nigerian communities. One of the primary obstacles is the deep-rooted mistrust and skepticism towards religious interventions in conflict resolution. In many cases, religious leaders are perceived as partisan actors who align with specific factions, thereby undermining their neutrality (Odeh, 2017). Additionally, cultural factors and traditional beliefs sometimes conflict with biblical teachings on peace and forgiveness, making it difficult for communities to fully embrace religious conflict resolution strategies. Addressing these challenges requires a multi-faceted approach that combines biblical principles with socio-political engagement, legal frameworks, and community-based peace initiatives.
This study aims to critically examine the applicability of biblical principles in resolving conflicts between Abba and Ukpo communities. By assessing the effectiveness of scriptural teachings in addressing disputes, the study seeks to highlight the role of faith-based mediation in fostering sustainable peace. The research will explore how biblical models of reconciliation can be integrated with existing conflict resolution mechanisms to achieve lasting harmony in conflict-prone communities.
Statement of the Problem
Conflicts in Nigeria have continued to escalate despite numerous interventions by governmental agencies, traditional institutions, and legal systems. The persistent communal clashes, especially those involving land disputes and historical grievances, have not only led to loss of lives and destruction of property but have also weakened social cohesion among affected communities (Olanrewaju & Okunola, 2020). The conflict between Abba in Njikoka Local Government Area and Ukpo in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State is a notable example of how unresolved disputes can foster long-term hostilities. While court rulings and law enforcement agencies have attempted to mediate in such disputes, their approaches often lack the moral and ethical dimensions needed to foster genuine reconciliation (Akinwale, 2019). This limitation raises the question of whether faith-based principles, particularly biblical teachings, could provide a more effective and sustainable resolution framework.
One of the major problems with conventional conflict resolution mechanisms is their focus on legalistic and political solutions, which often fail to address the emotional and psychological wounds of the parties involved. Many of these conflicts have deep-rooted causes that transcend land ownership and extend into issues of historical marginalization, identity, and economic dominance (Edeh, 2021). The existing legal frameworks in Nigeria tend to prioritize punitive measures rather than reconciliation, which can sometimes exacerbate grievances rather than resolve them (Ogunyemi, 2020). The biblical approach, on the other hand, promotes restorative justice, which seeks to heal relationships and establish lasting peace. However, despite its potential effectiveness, there has been little empirical research on how biblical principles can be systematically applied to communal conflict resolution in Nigeria.
Another significant problem is the role of political and economic interests in fueling conflicts between communities. Many communal clashes in Nigeria are not merely the result of disagreements over land or resources but are often intensified by influential individuals or groups who benefit from prolonged disputes (Ajayi & Buhari, 2022). In the case of Abba and Ukpo, allegations of political interference and elite manipulation have further complicated resolution efforts, making it difficult for conventional approaches to achieve meaningful peace. Faith-based interventions, particularly those rooted in biblical teachings, have the potential to neutralize these external influences by appealing to the moral and ethical consciousness of the conflicting parties (Obiorah, 2020). However, there is limited documentation on how such interventions can be structured to navigate the complexities of local politics and power dynamics effectively.
Furthermore, the role of religious institutions in conflict resolution has often been met with skepticism due to perceptions of bias or lack of neutrality. While many churches and religious organizations in Nigeria have engaged in peacebuilding efforts, some communities remain reluctant to accept religious mediation, fearing that it may be influenced by denominational or doctrinal biases (Ezeanya, 2018). Additionally, the effectiveness of biblical conflict resolution strategies is often undermined by cultural resistance to forgiveness and reconciliation, especially in cases where conflicts have persisted for generations. In deeply divided societies, there is often a preference for retributive justice over restorative justice, making it difficult to implement biblical principles such as forgiveness and peaceful dialogue (Okonkwo, 2017).
Given these challenges, this study seeks to investigate the extent to which biblical principles can serve as an effective tool for resolving conflicts between the Abba and Ukpo communities. It aims to bridge the gap between faith-based conflict resolution and existing legal and political mechanisms by examining how biblical teachings can address the root causes of conflicts rather than merely managing their symptoms.

It will encourage people to embrace forgiveness, tolerance, and dialogue as essential tools for resolving conflicts in their daily lives, thereby promoting social harmony.
scope of the Study
This study focused on examining the effectiveness of biblical principles in promoting societal peace and resolving conflicts between the Abba community in Njikoka LGA and the Ukpo community in Dunukofia LGA, both in Anambra State. It specifically investigated the role of faith-based mediation in addressing communal disputes and assessed how biblical teachings on reconciliation, forgiveness, and justice influenced peacebuilding efforts. The study explored how these principles compared with conventional conflict resolution methods, particularly legal and governmental interventions, in fostering lasting peace between the two communities.
A quantitative research method was adopted for this study. Data was collected using structured questionnaires administered to selected respondents from both communities. The study targeted religious leaders, traditional rulers, community members, and policymakers to assess their perceptions of the impact of biblical principles on conflict resolution. The collected data was analyzed using statistical tools to determine patterns, relationships, and the effectiveness of faith-based mediation in comparison to other conflict resolution strategies.
The study was limited to the conflict between Abba and Ukpo, providing an in-depth analysis of the historical context, causes, and previous efforts at resolution. While acknowledging the influence of cultural and traditional factors, the study primarily examined how biblical teachings shaped attitudes toward peace, forgiveness, and justice in the conflict. The findings and recommendations were, therefore, centered on the potential of biblical principles in fostering reconciliation and sustainable peace within the context of the selected communities.
