However, despite its recognized importance, many developing countries face persistent challenges in leveraging transportation systems for sustainable development. These challenges include inadequate infrastructure, poorly maintained networks, and a lack of integration between urban planning and transportation policies. Inadequate infrastructure often results in congested roads, insufficient public transit options, and limited access to rural areas, thereby hindering economic activities. Poorly maintained networks further exacerbate the problem, leading to increased vehicle operating costs, accidents, and reduced efficiency. Additionally, the lack of coordination between urban planning and transportation policies often results in urban sprawl, inefficient land use, and limited connectivity between residential, commercial, and industrial areas. To address these challenges, developing nations must prioritize investment in sustainable transportation infrastructure, adopt modern technologies, and implement policies that integrate urban planning with transportation development. By doing so, they can unlock the full potential of transportation systems as a driver of economic growth, social equity, and environmental sustainability. This study investigates the influence of transportation infrastructure on economic growth and urban development in developing nations, with a particular focus on Nigeria. The research aims to provide insights into how improvements in transportation systems, including roads, railways, and airports, contribute to economic prosperity and urbanization in developing countries. Specifically, it seeks to analyze the relationship between transportation infrastructure investments and changes in economic output and urban growth in Nigeria, a representative developing nation. By understanding these dynamics, the study aims to contribute valuable policy recommendations to enhance infrastructure investments for sustainable economic development and urbanization in similar contexts. The study is guided by two key objectives: (1) to assess the impact of transportation infrastructure on the economic growth of Nigeria, and (2) to examine the role of transportation infrastructure in urban development. The research approach relies on secondary data analysis, focusing on data collected from reputable national and international sources such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), and other relevant governmental and academic sources. The data includes various economic indicators, infrastructure development statistics, and urbanization trends over several decades, providing a broad temporal perspective of the subject matter. The methodology adopted for the study is quantitative, using a deductive research approach to test existing theoretical frameworks, such as the Growth Pole Theory and the Sustainable Development Theory, with a focus on secondary data analysis. Descriptive statistics were initially employed to provide an overview of trends in transportation infrastructure development, economic growth, and urbanization. Subsequently, correlation analysis was used to explore the relationships between transportation infrastructure and the two key variables: economic growth and urban development.
