ABSTRACT
The study examined the impact of women's empowerment in cassava production and processing on household poverty status in Oyo State, Nigeria. It also explored the relationship between farm household characteristics and community food security, the effect of microcredit access on rural household livelihood, and the influence of gender on resource use efficiency in cocoyam production. Relevant conceptual, theoretical, and empirical literature was reviewed. The study employed a descriptive survey design, and data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to 300 conveniently sampled respondents across selected farming communities in Oyo State. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square were used to analyze the data. Findings revealed that women's empowerment in cassava production and processing significantly improves household economic status, reducing poverty levels. The study also found a significant relationship between farm household characteristics and community food security, highlighting the role of education, farm size, and income in ensuring food availability. Furthermore, access to microcredit was shown to have a positive and significant effect on rural household livelihood, improving agricultural productivity and financial stability. Lastly, findings indicated that gender significantly influences resource use efficiency in cocoyam production, with male farmers generally having better access to resources compared to their female counterparts. Based on these findings, it was concluded that enhancing women's participation in agriculture, improving microcredit accessibility, and addressing gender disparities in resource allocation are crucial for rural economic development. It was recommended that policymakers and financial institutions should design inclusive agricultural financing schemes, while extension services should focus on promoting gender equity in farming practices to enhance food security and poverty reduction.

INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Agriculture is a critical sector in Nigeria, contributing approximately 24% to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employing over 70% of the rural population (National Bureau of Statistics [NBS], 2021). However, climate change has emerged as a major threat to the sector, reducing agricultural productivity through erratic rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, increased temperatures, and flooding (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change [IPCC], 2022). These changes pose significant risks to food security, particularly for smallholder farmers who rely on rain-fed agriculture. In response, the adoption of Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) has been advocated as a means of building resilience against climate-related challenges while enhancing productivity and sustainability (Food and Agriculture Organization [FAO], 2018). CSA integrates various approaches, including the use of drought-resistant crop varieties, agroforestry, conservation tillage, and improved irrigation systems, all of which aim to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change while improving food security (Lipper et al., 2014).
In Nigeria, food insecurity remains a critical concern, with approximately 21% of the population experiencing moderate to severe food insecurity due to low agricultural productivity, poor post-harvest management, and limited access to agricultural inputs and technologies (FAO, 2021). The situation is more pronounced in rural communities, such as Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of Oyo State, where the majority of arable crop farmers depend on traditional farming methods that are highly vulnerable to climate variability (Ajibade et al., 2020). Studies have shown that erratic weather patterns, such as delayed onset of rainfall and increased dry spells, have significantly affected crop yields in the region, thereby exacerbating food insecurity and economic hardship among farming households (Ojo et al., 2019). While CSA offers a potential solution to these challenges, the level of adoption among farmers in the area remains unclear. Understanding the extent of CSA implementation and its effects on food security is, therefore, essential in addressing the threats posed by climate change to agricultural productivity.
Despite the benefits of CSA, adoption among Nigerian farmers has been relatively low due to various socio-economic and institutional barriers. Research indicates that factors such as low awareness, high cost of climate-smart technologies, inadequate access to credit, and limited extension services hinder the widespread adoption of CSA practices (Ayanlade & Radeny, 2020). In particular, smallholder farmers in Oyo State face constraints in acquiring improved seeds, irrigation facilities, and climate information services, all of which are crucial for successful CSA adoption (Oyekale, 2022). Furthermore, the level of education and farming experience significantly influence farmers’ willingness to adopt climate-smart practices, as more educated farmers tend to be more receptive to innovative agricultural techniques (Adepoju & Oyeyemi, 2020). In light of these challenges, it is important to examine how CSA adoption impacts food security among arable crop farmers in Ogbomoso North and to identify the key factors influencing the adoption process.
The relationship between CSA adoption and food security is well-documented in global literature. Studies have shown that CSA interventions, such as crop diversification, soil fertility management, and integrated pest control, have the potential to increase agricultural productivity, stabilize food supply, and enhance household incomes (Lal, 2020). In Nigeria, case studies from different agro-ecological zones suggest that farmers who integrate CSA practices into their farming systems experience higher yields and improved resilience to climate shocks (Bello et al., 2021).
However, there is a need for localized research to understand the specific dynamics of CSA adoption in different regions, particularly in Ogbomoso North, where climate variability and food security challenges persist. Given that government policies and non-governmental interventions play a crucial role in supporting climate-smart initiatives, an in-depth analysis of the effectiveness of current policies and their impact on farmers’ adoption of CSA is also necessary (Nwafor et al., 2021). This study, therefore, seeks to explore the effects of climate-smart adoption on food security among arable crop farmers in Ogbomoso North Local Government Area.
Statement of the Problem
Climate change remains one of the most pressing challenges confronting global agriculture, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria, where the majority of farmers depend on rain-fed agriculture (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change [IPCC], 2022). Erratic rainfall patterns, increased temperatures, prolonged droughts, and frequent floods have significantly disrupted farming activities, leading to declining crop yields and heightened food insecurity (Food and Agriculture Organization [FAO], 2021). In Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of Oyo State, arable crop farmers are increasingly vulnerable to these climate-induced risks, as their dependence on traditional farming methods limits their capacity to adapt and sustain food production (Ajibade et al., 2020). While Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) has been proposed as a viable strategy for enhancing agricultural resilience and productivity, the extent to which these practices have been adopted and their effectiveness in improving food security among farmers in the region remain largely unexplored.
Food security in Nigeria has worsened over the years, with about 21% of the population experiencing food insecurity due to low productivity, post-harvest losses, and the effects of climate change (FAO, 2021). Smallholder farmers, who contribute significantly to national food production, are particularly affected, as they often lack the resources, knowledge, and infrastructure required to mitigate climate change impacts (Ayanlade & Radeny, 2020). In Ogbomoso North, where agriculture is a key livelihood, farmers face multiple constraints, including declining soil fertility, reduced access to improved seedlings, and poor irrigation facilities (Oyekale, 2022). Although CSA practices, such as conservation tillage, crop diversification, and climate-resilient crop varieties, have been shown to enhance food security (Lal, 2020), there is limited empirical evidence on how these practices influence the food availability, accessibility, and affordability of households in the study area. Understanding this relationship is essential for designing targeted interventions that will enhance climate adaptation among farmers.
Despite the increasing advocacy for CSA adoption, several factors continue to hinder its widespread implementation among Nigerian farmers. Studies have identified barriers such as high costs of climate-smart technologies, inadequate extension services, lack of financial support, and socio-cultural resistance to change (Adepoju & Oyeyemi, 2020). In rural communities like Ogbomoso North, many farmers have limited access to climate information services, making it difficult for them to make informed decisions regarding climate adaptation strategies (Bello et al., 2021). Furthermore, education levels and farming experience play significant roles in influencing farmers’ willingness to adopt CSA techniques, with better-informed farmers more likely to integrate climate-resilient practices into their farming systems (Ajibade et al., 2020). However, there is still a gap in understanding how these socio-economic factors specifically affect CSA adoption in Ogbomoso North and how addressing them can enhance food security outcomes.
Given the growing threat of climate change to food security, there is an urgent need to assess the effectiveness of CSA adoption in improving agricultural productivity and food security among arable crop farmers in Ogbomoso North. While existing studies have examined CSA adoption in Nigeria broadly (Ojo et al., 2019), there is a lack of region-specific research that considers the unique challenges faced by farmers in Oyo State. Without empirical evidence on the adoption levels, challenges, and impact of CSA practices in this region, policymakers and stakeholders may struggle to implement effective agricultural interventions. Therefore, this study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the extent to which CSA adoption has influenced food security among arable crop farmers in Ogbomoso North, with the goal of providing insights that can inform climate adaptation policies and enhance the resilience of local farming communities.
Objectives of the Study

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of key agricultural and economic issues affecting rural households in Oyo State, Nigeria. By examining women’s empowerment in cassava production and processing, farm household and community food security, the effects of microcredit on livelihoods, and gender-based resource use efficiency in cocoyam production, the findings will be beneficial to diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, financial institutions, agricultural extension agents, farmers, and researchers.
The study will be particularly beneficial to policymakers and government agencies, as it will provide empirical evidence on the role of women in cassava production and how their empowerment can contribute to poverty reduction at the household level. The findings will inform the design and implementation of gender-sensitive agricultural policies that enhance women's participation in agribusiness. Additionally, the study’s insights into food security will assist in shaping policies aimed at ensuring sustainable agricultural practices and reducing hunger in rural communities.
For financial institutions and microcredit providers, the research will highlight the impact of access to microcredit on rural households’ livelihoods. The findings will offer guidance on how to structure loan products that are more accessible and beneficial to smallholder farmers, particularly women, thereby improving rural financial inclusion and economic empowerment.
Agricultural extension agents and development organizations will also benefit from the study as it sheds light on gender-based resource use efficiency in cocoyam production. By understanding how gender dynamics influence productivity, extension services can be tailored to address the specific needs of male and female farmers, thereby enhancing efficiency and overall agricultural output.
For farmers and rural households, the study will provide practical insights into the benefits of adopting improved production and processing techniques in cassava and cocoyam farming. It will also emphasize the importance of microcredit in boosting agricultural productivity and improving their standard of living. Increased awareness of these factors can encourage more farmers, particularly women, to engage in agricultural activities that enhance food security and economic sustainability.
Finally, academics and researchers will find the study valuable as it contributes to the growing body of knowledge on rural development, gender studies, and agricultural economics. The findings will serve as a reference for future research and encourage further exploration into the intersections of gender, agriculture, and economic empowerment in Nigeria and beyond.
Scope of the Study
This study focused on analyzing various aspects of agricultural development and rural livelihoods in Oyo State, Nigeria. Specifically, it examined the role of women’s empowerment in cassava production and processing as a means of improving household poverty status. The study assessed the level of women's participation in cassava farming and processing activities, the challenges they encountered, and how their involvement contributed to household income and overall economic well-being.
Furthermore, the study investigated the relationship between farm household characteristics and community food security in Oyo State. It explored factors such as farm size, access to agricultural inputs, and market availability to determine their impact on food security at both household and community levels. The research also analyzed the availability, accessibility, and affordability of food among rural households.
In addition, the study assessed the effects of microcredit on the livelihoods of rural households. It examined the extent to which smallholder farmers and rural entrepreneurs had access to microcredit facilities and how these financial resources influenced their productivity, income levels, and standard of living. The research considered various microcredit sources, including formal financial institutions, cooperatives, and informal lending networks.
Lastly, the study focused on gender and resource use efficiency in cocoyam production in Oyo State. It analyzed how male and female farmers utilized agricultural resources such as land, labor, and inputs in cocoyam farming. The study also evaluated the differences in productivity and efficiency between male and female farmers, identifying potential barriers to optimal resource utilization.
Geographically, the study was limited to Oyo State, Nigeria, and data were collected from selected rural communities within the state. The study adopted a quantitative and qualitative research approach, utilizing surveys, interviews, and secondary data sources to gather relevant information. The findings provided insights into the economic and agricultural dynamics of rural households in the state, with implications for policymakers, financial institutions, agricultural extension workers, and rural development agencies.
Women’s Empowerment in Cassava Production and Processing – This refers to the ability of women to participate actively in cassava farming and processing activities, make decisions regarding production, access resources, and contribute to household income and economic growth in Oyo State, Nigeria.
Household Poverty Status – This denotes the economic condition of a household based on income level, access to basic needs such as food, shelter, education, and healthcare, as influenced by engagement in cassava production and processing.
Farm Household – A group of individuals living together in a rural setting who depend on farming as their primary source of livelihood. In this study, it refers to households engaged in agricultural activities within Oyo State.
Community Food Security – The availability, accessibility, and affordability of sufficient, nutritious food for all individuals within a community. It is influenced by factors such as farm productivity, market accessibility, and government policies.
