1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Transportation stress is one of the major challenges faced by students of Federal university of Technology Akure (FUTA) and the school management have shown a lackadaisical approach towards this problem. Student transport is very important although there is little attention by government which has led to significant impact on transport demands for students during peak hours. As a result according to Lurdes, Didier and Pascal (2003) can facilitate drop out in schools for children from poor families. Numbers of studies have established that poor student attendance is an important predictor of school failure (Janes, 2009).
Some of the major transportation stress faced by students is due to the following reasons:
1. Inavailability of buses for the transportation of students
2. Increase in the price of transport fee
3. Huge traffic
4. Far distance of school hostel from the school premises.
Transportation stress has really pose a problem on the academic performance of students because after the stress of getting transport to school, most students gets so tired on getting to the lecture room and find it very difficult to concentrate. Lack of adequate transportation in the school has been the reason why most students frequently get to class very late and they eventually miss out from the most important part of the class. These factors contribute to the poor academic performances of students.
Achievement gains in education are determined to a great degree by time-on-task and time allocated for learning. Students who spend more time on task tend to demonstrate more achievement gains than students who spend less time on task (Sanford and Evertson, 1983; McKinney, 2000).
The amount of time actually the student spent in the classroom has a direct correlation to a student’s accesses education (Babyegeya, 2002). It means that when a student comes late, skips class or being absent for whole day he or she will face difficult to access education that lead catastrophe to achieve the best results. In order to improve education, the government requested public transport operators to transport students at moderated fare but with the absence of any monetary compensation. Lurdes et al (2003) contended that it is unprofitable customers of school children at rush hours since more than 90 percent of public transport dominated by private sector which increases in the number of incidents and discrimination concerning school children
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Transport is one of the major problems facing students federall universitu of technology Akure to attend their classes at specific time due to distance where the schools allocated. It is difficult for students to get to school in the morning as adult people and bus operators compete with them to board the public buses (Onyango, 2012). Transport has consistently caused problems for students although the government is trying to make effort to improve it.
Some of the problems transport stress causes among students are
1. Frequent lateness to class: one of the reasons why students have poor academic performance in school is due to lateness to classes which is usually caused by inadequate transport facilities.
2. Fatigue: after going through the stress of getting transportation to school, students become very tired when they get to the classroom. This reduces the concentration to the students to what is been taught thereby leading to a poor performance in school.
3. School attendance: inadequate transport facilities have an effect of students school attendance. Most students abscond from scholl due to the inability to get transportation to school.
For these reasons and many others, this study is carried out to examine the impact of transport stress on students’ academic performance in federal university of technology Akure.
1.3 OBJECTIVE IF THE STUDY
The general objective of this study is to carry out to examine the impact of transport stress on students’ academic performance in federal university of technology Akure. The specific objectives are:
1. To ascertain the availability of transport facilities in federal university of technology Akure.
2. To find out the causes of transport stress among students of federal university of technology Akure.
3. To examine the impact of transport stress on students’ school attendance.
4. To determine the extent at which transport stress influences students’ lateness to class.
5. To ascertain the relationship between transport stress and poor academic performance among students of federal university of technology Akure.
1.4 RESEARCH QUESTION
The relevant research questions related to this study are:
1. Is there availability of transport facilities in federal university of technology Akure?
2. What are the causes of transport stress among students of federal university of technology Akure?
3. What is the impact of transport stress on students’ school attendance?
4. What is the extent at which transport stress influences students’ lateness to class?
5. What is the relationship between transport stress and poor academic performance among students of federal university of technology Akure?
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
This finding provides information on the impact of transport stress on students’ academic performance among students in the university. The findings help to establish if transport stress have a negative influence on the academic performance of students in the university. One of the causes of transport stress is due to inavaailability of transportation facilities, the findings from this study will help the management to ascertain the need to provide adequate transportation facilities for students in order to make their transport very easy.
The findings of this study is significant to the government because it points out the responsibilities of the government in reducing transport stress among students. So this study focuses on the impact of transport stress on students’ academic performance among students in the university, using federal university of technology Akure as a case study.
1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this study is restricted to the impact of transport stress on students’ academic performance among students in federal university of technology Akure
1.7 LIMITATION OF STUDY
The limitations encountered during this study are lack of adequate resources on the subject of study; most of the respondents are not ready to be interviewed and also inadequate time
1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS
Transportation: is the act of carrying from one place to another.
