ABSTRACT

It is a fact that management of educational resources is a crucial aspect of school management that cannot be neglected. In the light of this, this research work investigated the resource management practices between public and private secondary schools in Yola Local Government Area of Adamawa State. Descriptive survey design was adopted in conducting the study. Random sampling technique was used in selecting 23 secondary schools, that is (six public and 17 private secondary schools respectively) out of the total of the 56 secondary schools in the Local Government Area.

An instrument tagged: “Resource Management Practices Questionnaire” (RMPQ) was used to collect relevant data in the study. The instrument was validated by six experts in the area of Educational Management in the Federal University of Technology Yola. Furthermore, test re-test technique was used to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. Its co-efficient of reliability was found to be 0.83. Three research questions were raised. The research questions raised were answered using descriptive statistical analysis such as frequency counts and percentage.

The results indicated that:

  1. There was difference in human resource management practices between public and private secondary schools in Yola Local Government Area.

  1. There was no difference in the management of financial resources between public and private secondary schools in Yola Local Government Area.

iii. There was difference in physical resource management practices between public and private secondary schools in Ilorin-South Local Government Area.

Based on the findings, it was recommended among others, that:

1). Government should ensure the effectiveness of teachers and staff development

by:

i). providing programmes that aim at correcting difficulties of staff at the time of

appointment,

ii). providing programmes which will enable teaching staff face the challenges arising from innovations in the school curriculum.

  1. Both public and private secondary schools should lay more emphasis on the management and supervision of school funds.

  1. Money that comes in as in-put resources and goes out as out-put resources or expenditures should be kept in appropriate records for the purpose of accountability.

  1. More facilities should be provided in schools and effective management culture of the facilities should be ensured.
