ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to find out, examine and investigate some of the deviant behaviour common in Federal Government Girls College, Benin City, Edo state and how they can be eradicated or minimized.

The information contained in this project work is the result of my personal observation, oral interview and with administered questionnaire to personnel, mostly teachers, parents and students of selected schools.

The result of my findings should that the commonest deviant behaviour are assault and insult of both teachers and parents, uses of charm, dishonesty, disobedience, drug offences, gambling, fighting, mass demonstration, sex offence, stealing, truancy, wickedness and indiscipline. This is as a result of influences, poor school physical condition, poor environment, bad peer groups, lack of poor school materials such as textbooks and seats, trace was also made to children from broken homes, poor family background and children keeping bad companies with peer groups. To each of these problems a solution has been suggested. If these suggestions are applied by parents, guidance and teachers and the problems of deviant behaviour will be reduce drastically in the country and in the secondary schools in Edo State.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

          Deviant behaviour is a big problem in Nigeria today some years ago Egyptians priest carved on a stone our earth degenerated children no longer obey their parents, the attention of different people was been drawn to the increase of deviant behaviour among youth nowadays.

          According to Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary seven editions define deviant behaviour as differently form of what most people consider to be normal and acceptable. Deviant behaviour can also be defined as not keeping to the rules and norms of the society, or the school norms.

It has been observed that quite numbers of students in higher institution of learning are deviant behaviour they become deviant when they engage in activities which are neither under the control of the school system in the society.

Deviant behavior is to deviate from the norms of a particular people in the society or community that in turning aside or away from set shown rules of political system or principle of a social, such behavior could be seen as crime, indiscipline in school, home prostitution, cultism, drunkenness e.t.c.

Through education service those manifestation can be eradicated of deviant behaviour in school which a lot of bad behavior are such smoking, drunkenness, abortion, stealing, prostitution and other. The family as an agent of socialization could have significant impact on the child this is evident from the fact that it is the first place where the child learn about leadership and what it takes, here basis skills and behavior pattern have to behave in the home are taught by parents taught by the parents.

The problem is that of deviant behaviour which a form of indiscipline is, the problem of deviant society manifest itself in the Nigeria society and most of our school product for example lack of total commitment and dedication of their work, lateness to work, neglect of duty and parent who feels less concern about their children are already asleep e.t.c. this means that the school should be able to produce disciplined pupils who are free from any deviant act or behavior be it during tanking drug addiction, truancy in school, abortion, sexual immorality, prostitution, bribery and corruption e.t.c.

In order word deviant behaviour is an act of indiscipline or behavior disorder which served as a major is of great source of some vices in Nigeria society. There is am adage which says that idle mind is the devils work shop. This denote since deviant behaviour has  made students to involve in bad habit they move about not saying in school to learn and they move about the streets and alleges without sense of direction, such stealing committing abortion, and absenteeism from school.

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study is concern with the investigation of the cause of deviant behaviour among federal government Girls College in Benin, Edo State.

The   influence of student background on deviant behaviour in school as well as examine the possible influence of the school environment teachers, society, peer groups, parent helps to promoting deviant behaviour among students. These are the following that would be sought out.

A.   Could the effect of deviant behaviour contribute to the performance of the child?

B.   Does emotional deprivation cause students to be deviant?

C.   Could deviant behaviour attribute to parent inability to meet the student school need?

D.   Could deviant behaviour cause students dropout from school

E.   To what extent has deviant behaviour contribute to the academic performance of the child?

1.3     PURPOSE OF STUDY  

This study is primarily intended to find out the cause of deviant behavior among the society especially those that are related to the home since charity they say begins at home. The study will also attempt to give suggestions on how to eliminate deviant behaviour from the society.

1.4     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY   

          This study could serve as reading test to the members of the public who could want to gain more or have a deeper knowledge of causes of deviant behavior among federal Government Girls College Benin, Edo state.

          These are the following people that we benefit from the research.

1.    Students.

2.    Parents.

3.    Society.

The research study will help at large to be aware of the causes and how to prevent the deviant behavior. It will also help the students to know what to do in order to accord the deviant behaviour. The parents can also benefit from the study of knowledge the causes of deviant behavior.

Also the society, when the society knows the major causes by deviant behavior among their self. It will help to reduce the deviant behavior from the society.

1.6     SCOPE OF THE STUDY 

 

          The research focuses attention on the one school and the school is Federal Government Girl’s College Benin, Edo State.

1.8     DEFINITION OF TERMS

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION: it is a formalized system which plan, coordinate, organize, staff reporting and evaluating of all matters of the entire school affairs.

PEER GROUP: People who are similar in development level such as age, education and other qualifications.

TRUANCY: act or habit of saying away from school which without permission.

ADOLESCENT: adolescent is a period where the growing children experience early accelerated growth spirit as she is growing towards adulthood, Akinboye (1985). It is a period between the chronological ages of 12-21 years.

BROKEN HOME: this refers to separation of parent either by divorce or desertion.

VALUES: like norms, values are part of what constitute the culture of a people and the value by which we live are also learned and shared.

CULTURE: Means a way of life, culture define appropriate, approved or required modes of behaviour thinking acting and feeling.

BEHAVIOUR: this refers to the way or mode of conduct especially towards other people either good or bad; that is, it is the way individual behaves.

          Behaviours of individual have not been able to imbibe the rules and norms of the society.
