INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Problem

            The items of the study are Educational facilities and social studies performance in Junior WAEC in Odeda Local Government Area Ogun State.

            Educational facilities are those essential resources that are needed for the effective operation and maintenance of any institution of the various uses, instructional materials, furniture, textbooks, equipment and all other infrastructures that are vital for the system.

            Although the subject matter has the connotation of performances facilities correlation, the objective goes beyond this. Anybody familiar with the recent educational development in Nigeria with readily appreciation not only the phenomenal growth of Nigeria educational system in all sphere but also with welcome the objective and philosophy of its policy on education granted.

            Before the government become interest in establishing schools and formulating of policies on educational system, the establishment of school was by missionary, religion’s body and some other voluntary agencies with the cooperation of the local people, few philanthropists and foreign benevolent (benefactors).

            The instructional material for the system was very scarce and this affected the quantity of education. But the government established one are well equipped.

            Federal government strived as much as possible in provision to the sphere of education of both facilities and equipment to facilitate learning and could also be used to alleviate poor performances in social studies among junior secondary school students in Odeda Local government.

            Finally, the focus of this project is on previous and present government efforts through the educational facilities and awareness of parents toward the issue of their children performances in order to alleviate students’ poor performance in social studies even in other subjects in Odeda Local Government Junior secondary school examination result.

1.2       Purpose of the Study

            The rational for this study established in the assumption that school can only fulfill their parts in the achievement of national objective by striving to produce high quality outputs. By the nature of the unfortunate situation existing in Nigeria today; school are bounded good or bad depending on the performance of students in their examination particularly on social studies. This study is design to:-

a.    Examine whether schools with adequate facilities do perform better in junior secondary school Examination especially in social studies.

b.    Determine whether supply to facilities for the effective learning will be necessary criteria for the achievement of students.

c.    Investigate what factors other than facilities that affect the result on their social studies.

d.    Make some recommendations towards the achievement of equalization status of school.

1.3       Research Questions

            The following research questions were generated for the purpose of this study:-

1)    Is there any improvement in the students’ performance in social studies when expose to educational facilities?

2)    Are there government provisions for educational facilities in teaching social studies in Odeda local government of Ogun State?

3)    Does the availabilities of educational facilities in teaching social studies arouse students interest towards the subject?

1.4       Significant of the Study

            The study is aimed at advocating for effective use of educational facilities and students in social studies performance in junior secondary school certificate Examination (JSSCE) in Odeda local government area Ogun State.

            The most importance of this study is to use the final result of the research to up roof the effect of poor performance and lay critical emphasis for the urgent solution.

            The findings of the study will be use to make recommendation to the policy maker and teacher on importance of educational facilities to the learning of social studies.

1.5       Scope of the Study

            Junior secondary schools out of eleven Secondary Schools that we have in the Area of study Odeda local government Area, Ogun State.

            The fairness sample school limit the extent to which any generalization can be made about results, also school are located nearly high way that expose to the view of people while Egba Odeda High school is at the Centre of Local Government and Salawa Abiola Comprehensive High school near federal college of education Osiele where in addition to several existing educational agencies, most of the students attending this schools come from nearly families whose extra attention to their children’s school work at home may influence the actual learning situation in schools.

            Another limitation is that there were the difficulties in getting some of the needed data due to the adequate records keeping in some schools.

1.6       Definition of Terms

Social Studies: can be described as the study of man in his relation and interaction with physical and social environment

Education: is the acquisition of knowledge’s, skills and moral behaviours in order to be function in society.

            The process of teaching and learning in a school or college.

Facilities: refers to needed for the efficient and affective outcome in certain event, it may be on sport, Education health e.t.c.

Examination: means of measuring the performance of students.

Certificate: The qualification received when you re successful in an Examination.

School: An organized place through which teaching and learning takes place

Secondary: Relating to the education of children between the age of 11 to 18ywears. The next institution after primary school level of education
